Zimbabwe Cracks Down on Drug Abuse with Harsher Fines and Joint Operations

In a bid to intensify its fight against drug and substance abuse, the Zimbabwean government has approved a significant upward review of fines and designated Crystal Meth as a dangerous drug.
Fines Increased to Deter Offenders
The fine for drug and substance abuse has been increased from level 5 (USD30) to level 7 (USD400 or the ZWL equivalent), with imprisonment for up to 2 years also a possible penalty.
Joint Operations Yield Results
A total of 2,373 individuals were arrested, and 48 drug bases were identified, raided, and destroyed nationwide. Joint operations involving the Liquor Licensing Board and the Zimbabwe Republic Police resulted in 724 liquor premises being inspected, with 124 outlet owners arrested for violating license conditions.
