Mbudzi Interchange Project Reaches 85% Completion: Transforming Harare’s Traffic Flow

The $88 million Mbudzi Interchange Project, a flagship infrastructure development under Zimbabwe’s Second Republic, has reached 85% completion, marking significant progress towards alleviating traffic congestion at one of Harare’s busiest junctions. The project is a key part of efforts to modernize the capital’s transport infrastructure and position it as a regional economic hub.

Progress Update

Current activities include erosion control measures and the dumping of crushed stone base material at Bridge No. 1 Underpass. With the deck level nearly complete on several bridges, the focus will soon shift to essential final steps, such as compaction, priming, tack coating, surfacing (tarring), road markings, and signage installation. Completion is targeted by the end of 2024

Strategic Impact

This development is set to eliminate the notorious gridlock associated with the old Mbudzi Roundabout. By separating traffic flows with dedicated lanes and ramps, the interchange will improve safety and reduce travel time. Furthermore, the interchange will integrate seamlessly with major roads such as Simon Mazorodze, Chitungwiza, and High Glen, boosting regional connectivity and supporting commerce

Economic and Local Benefits

The project is spearheaded by Tefoma Construction, a consortium of local firms, showcasing the government’s confidence in Zimbabwean expertise. It has created over 700 direct jobs and numerous downstream opportunities, with local funding ensuring economic sovereignty. This modern infrastructure is expected to spur development in surrounding areas, attract investment, and enhance Harare’s economic competitiveness

Regional Comparisons

The Mbudzi Interchange mirrors similar transformative projects in neighboring countries, such as South Africa’s Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and Namibia’s Windhoek Northern Bypass. These projects demonstrate the long-term benefits of reducing urban traffic congestion and promoting economic growth

As Harare prepares for this game-changing infrastructure, residents and stakeholders eagerly await the completion of a project set to redefine the city’s transportation landscape.
