ZRP Launches Drone Surveillance to Crack Down on Traffic Offenders in Harare

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has taken a bold step in modernizing its traffic law enforcement by deploying drones across Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding areas. The initiative, part of the Electronic Traffic Management System (ETMS), is aimed at curbing rampant traffic violations and restoring order on the city’s congested roads.

Drones to Monitor Traffic Offences in Real Time

According to ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the drones will complement existing surveillance cameras and enhance the force’s ability to monitor and capture real-time footage of traffic offenders. The high-tech drones are capable of patrolling a 20-kilometer radius from the CBD, identifying offences such as:

• Illegal passenger pick-ups and drop-offs
• Driving against the flow of traffic
• Unauthorized creation of lanes
• Ignoring stop signs
• Operating unlicensed public service vehicles

This crackdown comes after the recent flagging of over 290 motorists for various offences captured by surveillance cameras, sparking debates over reckless driving and the need for stringent measures.

Smart Policing Strategy Gains Momentum

The drone deployment forms part of ZRP’s broader Smart Policing Strategy, which integrates technology to improve law enforcement capabilities. This strategy aims to promote road safety, decongest traffic hotspots, and hold offenders accountable.

“The days of reckless driving are coming to an end,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi declared. “Motorists must respect the law and contribute to the safety of all road users.”

Mixed Reactions from the Public

While many welcome the initiative as a step towards safer roads, some citizens have raised concerns about privacy, data protection, and how offenders are notified, especially following the publication of traffic violators’ names online.

The ZRP has assured the public that all operations will be conducted within the law, and that the primary goal is public safety, not surveillance overreach.
