Zimbabwe’s Wheat Production Soars Due to Reliable Power Supply

Government’s Commitment to Food Security Yields Positive Results

Zimbabwe’s wheat farmers are reaping the benefits of a reliable power supply, thanks to the government’s efforts to ensure a steady 100 megawatts (MW) to the agricultural sector. This move has led to a significant increase in irrigation and wheat production, with over 121,769 hectares now under irrigation, a 34% increase from the previous season.

Agricultural Sector on the Rise

According to a weekly update on Agricultural Advisory and Rural Development, the early planted wheat is now at the vegetative stage, while the late-planted crop is germinating, but in good condition. The country is expected to produce over 600,000 tonnes of wheat, exceeding last year’s record of 468,000 tonnes.

Food Security and Economic Growth

Zimbabwe’s increased wheat production presents opportunities for expanded product development and innovation in the food industry, particularly in traditional products like bread, baking flour, and pasta. This development is attributed to the government’s efforts to prioritize food security and support agricultural growth in the country.

Diversification of Crops

Besides wheat, another 6,449 hectares are under barley, which largely goes towards malting and brewing. Tobacco farmers have also contributed significantly to the country’s foreign currency earnings, with the country realizing US$650,3 million from tobacco sales in 2022.

Smallholder Farmers’ Resilience

Implementation of irrigation schemes throughout the country has seen smallholder farmers producing enough grain for consumption. Despite challenges, smallholder farmers have shown resilience, producing surplus for supply to Grain Market Board (GMB), and reinvesting in their farming business.

Government’s Incentives

The Government has significantly increased producer prices for strategic grains and shifted to paying farmers exclusively in US dollars upon delivery to GMB, incentivizing farmers to continue producing more grain for the country.

Infrastructure Development

President E.D. Mnangagwa’s leadership has also seen significant infrastructure development in recent times, including the reconstruction of major roads, construction of new dams, and expansion of student housing at universities.
