Zimbabwe’s Second Republic Breaks Records: A New Era of Growth and Unity Under President Mnangagwa

Under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership, Zimbabwe’s Second Republic is ushering in a period of remarkable economic growth and political maturity. Key sectors are experiencing unprecedented achievements, signaling a commitment to national development and prosperity.
Record-Breaking Wheat Harvest
In 2024, Zimbabwe achieved a historic milestone in agriculture with a record wheat harvest. Farmers cultivated 119,594 hectares, yielding 563,961 metric tonnes of wheat. This 30% increase from the previous year’s 91,000 hectares underscores the effectiveness of government support and collaborative efforts within the agricultural sector.
Surge in Gold Production
The mining sector has also demonstrated significant growth. Gold production reached a record 36.48 tonnes in 2024, marking a 21% increase from the 30.1 tonnes recorded in 2023. This achievement not only surpassed the government’s annual target of 35 tonnes but also exceeded the previous record of 35.3 tonnes set in 2022.
Stabilization of the National Currency
The introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency has contributed to economic stability. Supported by substantial gold reserves, which have surged to $533 million, the ZiG has maintained a stable exchange rate over the past year. This financial stability has been instrumental in fostering economic growth and investor confidence.
Advancements in Political Engagement
Demonstrating political maturity, parliamentarians from various parties participated in a historic familiarization tour of the First Family’s Precabe Farm. This event was lauded by political analyst Professor Jonathan Moyo as a significant step toward unity and engagement across the political spectrum.
President Mnangagwa’s establishment of the Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) in 2019 further exemplifies his commitment to inclusive governance. This platform facilitates dialogue with opposition parties to collaboratively address national challenges, reflecting a leadership style that prioritizes national cohesion and development.
A Vision for Sustained Growth
These accomplishments reflect the government’s dedication to revitalizing the economy and enhancing citizens’ quality of life. As Zimbabwe embarks on the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) for 2025 to 2030, there is growing advocacy for President Mnangagwa to extend his leadership to 2033, ensuring the continuity of these developmental initiatives.
The Second Republic’s focus on agricultural innovation, mining sector expansion, currency stabilization, and political inclusivity positions Zimbabwe on a promising trajectory toward sustained prosperity and growth.
