Trabablas Interchange Nears Completion: A Milestone in Zimbabwe’s Infrastructure Development

Harare, Zimbabwe – May 1, 2025
The much-anticipated Trabablas Interchange, formerly known as the Mbudzi Roundabout, is nearing completion, marking a significant advancement in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership. This US$88 million project is poised to revolutionize traffic flow in southern Harare, alleviating longstanding congestion issues and symbolizing the nation’s commitment to modernization.
Strategic Importance of the Trabablas Interchange
Situated at the confluence of Simon Mazorodze, Chitungwiza, and High Glen roads, the interchange is a critical junction for both local commuters and regional traffic along the Harare-Beitbridge Highway. The previous roundabout was notorious for severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours, impeding efficient transportation and economic activities. The new interchange aims to facilitate smoother travel, reduce transit times, and enhance road safety.
Construction Progress and Economic Impact
As of December 2024, the project was reported to be 91% complete, with 13 out of 15 bridges constructed. The construction is being undertaken by Tefoma Construction, a consortium comprising Tensor Systems, Fossil Contracting, and Masimba Construction. The project has generated over 600 jobs, contributing to local employment and skill development. Despite initial delays, the interchange is expected to be operational by May 2025, aligning with the government’s Vision 2030 agenda for national development.
Renaming to Honor Presidential Leadership
In recognition of President Mnangagwa’s contributions to national development, the government has officially renamed the Mbudzi Interchange to the Trabablas Interchange, reflecting the President’s liberation war moniker. This decision, announced during a Cabinet briefing in December 2024, underscores the administration’s commitment to acknowledging leadership that drives tangible progress.
Broader Infrastructure Initiatives
The Trabablas Interchange is part of a broader infrastructure modernization program spearheaded by President Mnangagwa’s administration. Other notable projects include the Harare-Beitbridge highway upgrade, rehabilitation of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and various rural road improvement initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and position Zimbabwe as a competitive player in regional trade.
Public Reception and Future Outlook
While the interchange’s development has been lauded for its potential to ease traffic woes and boost economic activities, the renaming has elicited mixed reactions. Supporters view it as a fitting tribute to the President’s vision, while critics express concerns over the trend of naming public infrastructure after political figures. Nonetheless, the completion of the Trabablas Interchange is anticipated to bring substantial benefits to commuters and the broader economy, symbolizing a step forward in Zimbabwe’s journey toward modernization.
