Zimbabwe’s Bold Leap into Digital Education: One Laptop Per Child Initiative Launched

In a transformative move to bridge the digital divide and modernize its education system, the Government of Zimbabwe has officially launched the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. This ambitious initiative aims to provide every learner, regardless of their geographic location or socio-economic background, with access to digital learning tools.


Empowering Learners Nationwide

The OLPC program is not merely about distributing laptops; it’s a comprehensive strategy to integrate technology into the learning process. By equipping students with laptops, the government seeks to foster digital literacy, enhance educational outcomes, and prepare learners for the demands of the 21st-century workforce. Integrating Renewable Energy Solutions

Recognizing the challenges of electricity access in remote areas, the government plans to utilize solar energy to power these devices. This sustainable approach ensures that students in off-grid regions can benefit from the program without the hindrance of power shortages.


Comprehensive Teacher Training in AI and Digital Literacy

A cornerstone of the OLPC initiative is the annual training of over 10,000 teachers and lecturers in artificial intelligence and digital literacy. This effort, in partnership with the United Arab Emirates’ Digital Schools and Global Skilling Academies, aims to create a digitally competent teaching workforce capable of effectively integrating technology into the curriculum.


Aligning with National Development Goals

The OLPC program complements Zimbabwe’s ongoing Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET) reforms and aligns with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Master Plan. These frameworks prioritize the digital economy as a key driver of socio-economic development, aiming to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income society characterized by a high quality of life for all its citizens.


Public-Private Partnerships and International Collaboration

To ensure the success and sustainability of the OLPC initiative, the government is fostering public-private partnerships and collaborating with international organizations. These collaborations aim to enhance teacher development, improve digital infrastructure, and promote inclusive growth in Zimbabwe’s rural communities.
