National Hero Dr. Sydney Gata: The Powerhouse Behind Zimbabwe’s Energy Revolution

Dr. Sydney Gata: Powering Zimbabwe’s Future with Vision and Integrity

Harare, Zimbabwe — July 6, 2025
Zimbabwe is mourning the passing of one of its most distinguished sons, Dr. Sydney Zikuzo Gata, a pioneer of the energy sector and national development strategist whose life’s work transformed the country’s electricity infrastructure. Declared a National Hero by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Dr. Gata’s legacy endures in the grids, homes, farms, and industries he helped illuminate.

From Engineer to Visionary Leader

Born in Chipinge, Manicaland, Dr. Gata earned his degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and began his illustrious career lecturing in the UK and Zimbabwe. He joined the Electricity Supply Commission (ESC) in 1981 and rose to become its first Black General Manager, laying the groundwork for Zimbabwe’s post-independence power autonomy.

⚡ Building Zimbabwe’s Energy Backbone

As CEO and later Executive Chairman of ZESA, Dr. Gata was instrumental in implementing major energy infrastructure projects:

  • Hwange Power Station Phases I & II (~920 MW capacity)
  • Rehabilitation of Kariba Hydropower Station
  • Expansion of the national 330kV transmission grid
  • Rural electrification master plans, connecting remote communities and enabling agricultural irrigation systems

Under his leadership, ZESA was unbundled into functional entities like ZPC, ZETDC, and Powertel, improving operational efficiency and transparency.

A Global Energy Advocate

Beyond Zimbabwe, Dr. Gata elevated the nation’s profile on the global stage:

  • Served on the World Energy Council (WEC) Board (1992–94)
  • Advised institutions like the African Development Bank (AfDB)
  • Championed sustainable electrification solutions across Africa

His belief in energy as a tool of empowerment resonated throughout his career. “The measure of a nation’s development is how it empowers its most remote citizens,” he once stated.

Honoured in Death as in Life

Dr. Gata passed away on 3 July 2025 at the age of 79 after a brief illness. President Mnangagwa hailed him as “a man of high integrity and a true servant of Zimbabwe.”

He will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre, joining a pantheon of icons whose dedication shaped the soul and structure of the nation.
