Mpilo, UBH Get 350kw Solar Systems: A Ray of Hope for Quality Healthcare
Government and UNDP partner to bring reliable and clean energy to healthcare facilities

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – In a significant development, Mpilo Hospital and United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) have received a boost in their energy supply with the installation of 350kw solar systems. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Government of Zimbabwe and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to provide a stable, clean, and reliable energy supply to these critical healthcare facilities.
A Step Towards Quality Healthcare
The solar systems, initially built using jelly batteries, are being upgraded to lithium batteries, which offer longer lifespan and durability. This upgrade will ensure an uninterrupted power supply, crucial for quality healthcare services. The installation of these solar systems is a significant step towards addressing the power challenges faced by the healthcare sector, particularly in the wake of El-Nino induced drought and low water levels at Kariba Dam, the country’s largest power generation plant.
Sun Harvesting: A Beacon of Hope
As the nation grapples with prolonged power outages, sun harvesting is emerging as a viable solution. The solar systems at Mpilo and UBH hospitals demonstrate the potential of renewable energy in addressing the country’s power challenges. This initiative sets a precedent for other healthcare facilities and institutions to adopt sustainable energy solutions, reducing reliance on traditional power sources.
