Seven Years of Restorative Leadership: Celebrating Operation Restore Legacy

November 2017 marked a turning point in Zimbabwean history with Operation Restore Legacy (ORL), a military-led intervention that ended an era of political and economic stagnation. The operation, spearheaded by then Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Commander and current Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga, successfully removed criminal elements surrounding the late former President Robert Mugabe. This peaceful transition was widely supported by citizens across political, social, and religious spheres, as well as by the international community.

A New Era of Stability and Development

Under President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputies, VPs Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, the Second Republic initiated bold reforms. The Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP) laid the groundwork for subsequent economic blueprints, National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and NDS2, to stabilize and transform the economy.

Zimbabwe rejoined the global community as a credible partner, attracting significant foreign investment. A landmark achievement includes the realization of the USD 12 billion mining economy, a vision that has catalyzed economic growth across multiple sectors.

Infrastructure Milestones Despite Sanctions

Despite enduring punitive international sanctions, Zimbabwe has recorded impressive infrastructure achievements:

  • Completion of Hwange Units 7 and 8, adding 600MW to the national grid.
  • Revival of the Gwai-Shangani Project, which had been stalled since 2012.
  • Nearly completed upgrades of the Masvingo-Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu highway, reducing travel hazards.
  • Modernized ports of entry, enhancing regional and international trade.

These projects were financed through innovative local resource mobilization strategies, showcasing resilience and resourcefulness.

A Nation United in Remembrance

The architects of this historic transition are celebrated seven years later, with many calling for a public holiday to honor the legacy of ORL. As Zimbabwe looks ahead, the leadership remains committed to economic sovereignty, political stability, and social cohesion.
