Zimbabwe Braces for Heavy Rains and Potential Flooding: Authorities Urge Caution

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning for heavy rains and potential flooding across Zimbabwe, particularly affecting Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls. The downpours are expected to persist from January 5 through January 11, 2025, with rainfall potentially exceeding 50 millimeters within 24 hours.

Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe emphasized the need for public vigilance during this period. He advised residents to exercise caution when crossing streams and rivers, avoid seeking shelter under trees during storms, refrain from walking barefoot in the rain, and remain indoors to mitigate risks associated with severe weather conditions.

The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has been activated to respond to any emergencies arising from the anticipated heavy rains. Minister Garwe assured that resources are in place to address potential challenges, stating, “We are prepared for any mishap that might befall us, and resources are available.”

The MSD has highlighted that flooding could occur even in areas that do not receive heavy rainfall, due to upstream conditions leading to downstream flooding. Additionally, violent storms may result in falling trees, blown-off rooftops, and collapsing billboards caused by strong winds.

Residents are advised to secure their properties, avoid parking vehicles under trees, and not to use outdoor heavy machinery during storms. The public is also reminded to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to safety advisories issued by authorities.
