Scottland FC Secures Major Financial Backing Ahead of Premier League Debut

Newly promoted Premier Soccer League (PSL) team, Scottland Football Club, has received significant financial support totaling US$2.5 million from prominent Zimbabwean businessmen, bolstering the club’s preparations for its top-flight debut.

IMC Communications’ US$1 Million Donation

On Friday night, IMC Communications, led by businessman Wicknell Chivayo, announced a US$1 million donation to Scottland FC. The funds are earmarked for the construction of a new stadium in Mabvuku, a suburb in eastern Harare. Ecobank senior executive Mike Dengwane, representing Chivayo, emphasized the community benefits of the project, stating that the stadium will serve not only Scottland FC but also the broader Mabvuku area, including Tafara, Ruwa, ZIMRE Park, Eastview, Epworth, and Msasa.

Sakunda Holdings’ US$1.5 Million Sponsorship

This generous contribution follows a US$1.5 million annual sponsorship deal from Sakunda Holdings, owned by Kuda Tagwirei, announced just a day earlier. The sponsorship includes provisions for playing, training, and travel kits, as well as support for the construction of the Mabvuku Stadium. Additionally, Sakunda Holdings has committed to facilitating visits for Scottland officials to three world-class stadiums to gather insights for their own facility. The deal also promises top-of-the-range vehicles for the team’s coach and captain.

He noted that the investments would facilitate the acquisition of quality players and coaches, as well as the development of programs aimed at empowering local youth.

Controversies Surrounding the Club

Despite the recent financial windfall, Scottland FC’s rise has not been without controversy. The club’s promotion to the PSL was marked by a disputed decision in the Northern Region Soccer League, where a boardroom ruling awarded Scottland a 3-0 victory in an abandoned match against Karoi United, leading to their championship title. Additionally, Sakupwanya’s unopposed election in a by-election, following the recall and barring of the incumbent MP, has drawn scrutiny.

Looking Ahead

With substantial financial backing and ambitious plans for infrastructure development, Scottland FC is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming PSL season. The club’s investments in facilities and talent acquisition reflect a commitment to establishing a strong presence in Zimbabwean football, while also contributing to community development in Mabvuku and surrounding areas.
