Community-Led Development Transforms Sunnybank in Sanyati Ward 2

In a remarkable display of unity and initiative, the Sunnybank community in Ward 2, Chakari Constituency, has embarked on a transformative development journey. Responding to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo” (a country is built by its own people), the community has achieved significant milestones in water access, agriculture, and livestock management.

Solar-Powered Boreholes Revolutionize Water Access

One of the most impactful developments has been the modernization of traditional bush pumps into fully solarized boreholes with tapped water. This initiative has drastically improved access to clean and safe water, eliminating the need for long, often hazardous journeys previously undertaken by women and girls to fetch water. Since Councillor Lilian Chifamba took office in 2023, eight boreholes have been drilled, installed, or renovated in Ward 2. These efforts align with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), aiming to enhance public health and reduce waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.

Enhancing Livestock Management and Food Security

Recognizing the importance of livestock in the community’s livelihood, the Sunnybank community has prioritized water access for animals. The provision of water points complements existing government-established ward cattle feeding stations. This initiative not only strengthens drought resilience but also supports disease control and improves livestock monitoring, further enhancing food security and economic stability.

Establishment of a Community Nutrition Garden

In line with President Mnangagwa’s Food for All and food self-sufficiency agenda, the Sunnybank community has established a nutrition garden directly benefiting 30 families and serving the broader Sunnybank and surrounding areas. This project is a collaboration between the community, the private sector—particularly Golden Valley Mine—and government technical advisors. Beyond providing nutrition, the garden offers a pathway to household income generation, allowing families to uplift their livelihoods while ensuring food and nutrition security.

A Model of Community-Driven Development

Thanks to the leadership of Councillor Lilian Chifamba and the resilient Sunnybank community, Ward 2 stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through unity, vision, and community-driven action. This transformation not only improves the quality of life for residents but also serves as a model for other communities aiming to achieve sustainable development.
